Shooting Stars is a stimulating and interactive room for our 3 – 5 year olds where they are encouraged for school readiness. The room can accommodate up to 12 children and the staff ratio to children ratio is 1:8.
The room is structured to enable children to be independent and explore the resources and equipment that is supportive to their learning. Activities are both Adult Led and Child Initiated with children being able to express their own interests and taking part in planning the activities.
Children are encouraged to be independent at this stage as they learn about themselves and those who are special to them. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) underpins all areas of the child’s development.
Children learn a great deal through play and imitating everyday actions that they have observed. They take great pleasure in pretend play and being able to express themselves freely through movement such as dance, outdoor play and using their imagination.
Children are often keen to learn new skills which will assist them in school such as learning to write their own name, sounding phonics, knowing their numbers and alphabet letters. Children tend to thoroughly enjoy listening to stories, like to sing songs and dance to music. Children should be able to attend to their own toileting needs and clearly state other needs to their key persons.
Parents are vital in their child’s development and assisting them in preparing for school by supporting the learning that is taking place at nursery and discussing their child’s progress with their key person and supporting the child’s next steps that have been identified by the key person.
The only medication that will be administered to children will be for life long conditions such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, EPI pen etc. No Calpol, Ibuprofen, Paracetamol or Anti-Biotics will be administered as these are for short term illnesses and a poorly child should be kept at home to prevent the spread of infections. If a child becomes poorly at nursery, parent(s) will be contacted in order for them to collect the child as soon as possible or for an alternative person to collect the child. Please refrain from bringing in a sick child to nursery.
